Q a. Using the index in the back of Roth’s Law Collections from Mesopotamia and Asia Minor, under “Slaves: fugitive,” look up all the laws from the ancient Near East that deal with runaway slaves: (1) Give the name of the law code (see p. xiv for abbreviations) and its date (see beginning of each law code for its date), together with the law’s reference (i.e., its paragraph number, or section number, or the like; e.g., “Code of Hammurabi, ¶¶ 15-20"). (2) Summarize the law in your own words. (3) Summarize the biblical ruling on runaway slaves (Deut 23:15), and compare/contrast the biblical command with the ANE laws. (4) What does the biblical law on runaway slaves reveal about the perspectives and values of the divine Lawgiver? b. Follow the same procedure for “rates, interest rates,” comparing these ANE laws with Lev 25:35-38 (and Exod 22:25). c. Follow the same procedure for “burglary,” but only in the Code of Hammurabi (CH) and the Middle Assyrian Laws A and B (MAL A; MAL B); and compare these with Exod 22:4, 7, 9. d. Read Gane, chaps. 5 and 6
